An African disability protocol
Press Statement - 3 February 2011
Feasible or Desirable
Venue: Fountain Hotel, 1 St Georges Mall, Cape Town
On 3rd February, in Cape Town, the Secretariat of the African Decade of Persons with Disabilities will convene a Roundtable of Disability Partners from Africa. The meeting will bring together eminent stakeholders from all over Africa and the world that will include disabled persons organisations, Universities, NGOs, Human Rights Commissions, Researchers and Experts on disability to discuss the proposed African Disability Protocol.
This Roundtable has been convened to consider the feasibility and desirability of an African Protocol being drafted by the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, an organ of the African Union, that addresses the rights of persons with disabilities on the African Continent.
Considering that a draft protocol exists and is expected to be completed during the Working Group meeting to be held at the end of February, 2011, the Roundtable aims to urgently discuss and deliberate a strategy and way forward. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and other Human Rights instruments will be used to guide the process.
